10 Ways to Combat Depression

...during Covid Lockdown or Anytime!

#1

#1 STAY ACTIVE

Even when you don't feel like it, it's important to just get moving. Just make an "appointment" with yourself and be sure to keep it... every day.

#2

#2 EAT WELL

You might be tempted to skip meals, or have no appetite. It's okay to eat less than usual, but be sure that what you eat is as nourishing as possible. Consider quick fix options like salads if you don't feel like cooking.

#3

#3 SOCIALIZE IN SMALL WAYS

You might want to hide at home and not get out of bed, but consider socializing in small ways, like getting out to the dog park once a week or helping out at a charity. Doing so will keep you connected without feeling overwhelming.

#4

#4 HELP OTHERS

Volunteer work is the BEST thing to do when you're too caught up in your own troubles. It can give you perspective and doing good just feels good.

#5

#5 FIND PERSPECTIVE

No matter how bad things seem, someone has been through something similar before you. Read about someone's struggles, or contemplate history, to realize how many people have survived similar difficulties.

#6

#6 CONTEMPLATE THE ENORMITY OF THE UNIVERSE

Another way to develop perspective, looking up at the vast expanse of the night sky can help you remember that hopefully your problems are actually relatively small... and if they ARE truly not minor problems, you really need to understand that clearly, too!

#7

#7 TREAT YOURSELF THE WAY YOU WOULD TREAT A FRIEND

Give yourself a break when you need it, try to remind yourself of the positives of the situation, and remind yourself constantly that you matter, you are important, and you will get through your difficult times.

#8

#8 ASK FOR HELP IF YOU NEED IT

Sometimes life is just overwhelming and you need to ask for help. Even if you feel awkward asking for help, you will find that most people truly care and want to help, but may not clearly know what you need.

#9

#9 CHERISH THE MEMORIES

Listen to music from your "better days", watch old movies or shows that remind you of better times, and relive your past "glory days" in your mind. Remembering past successes can give you strength to get through ... while you're waiting for your NEXT "golden age" to begin!

#10

#10 PRACTICE GRATITUDE

Although you may sometimes feel you have nothing to be thankful for, many things probably went right today... count them. Notice them. Focus on them. We tend to give problems more weight than the good things in our lives. Try to do the opposite. It can change your life.
